Microcredit Scheme for Rural Farmers

Goal:
  • Protect Madagascars rainforest by developing alternatives to shifting cultivation
  • Generate sustainable income-generating opportunities for small farmers and their families
  • Implement credit line to purchase ginger seeds (to be paid back in ginger) for 200 families
Reason for funding
  • double-win: high income effect and biodiversity protection
  • participatory approach: project designed in close interaction with local communities
  • Transfer of know-how on sustainable agriculture from University of Antananarivo
Current evaluation
  • First round of ginger plantation successfully completed
  • Ongoing evaluation of project
